Background History of The Bombing of Chongqing

From February 18, 1938, to December 19, 1944, Chongqing endured relentless terror bombings by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service and Navy Air Service.
During China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Chongqing served as the wartime capital, making it a prime target for air raids that spanned nearly seven years.

These indiscriminate attacks struck factories, commercial districts, and residential areas, marking the campaign as one of the most prolonged, brutal, and devastating in the history of human warfare.
The June 5, 1941, tragedy at the Jiaochangkou Grand Tunnel stands as a harrowing testament to this period, where countless civilians, seeking shelter from the bombings, suffocated or were trampled to death in a desperate struggle for safety.
Built upon the remnants of this tragedy, the June Fifth Tunnel Tragedy Historical Facts Exhibition Hall serves as a poignant memorial to the resilience and sacrifice of those who endured.
