Luohan Arhat Temple Highlights

Located in the bustling heart of Chongqing’s Jiefangbei, where modern skyscrapers and economic hubs dominate the skyline, lies a hidden gem of history and tranquillity: the Luohan Temple. Built during the years 1064–1067 of the Northern Song Dynasty, this ancient temple offers a stark and fascinating contrast to the surrounding high-rises that define the city’s Central Business District (CBD).

The Song Dynasty Carvings

The Song Dynasty Carvings are right at the entrance when you walk into Luohan temple. These ancient stone reliefs are not just art; they’re the very origin story of the temple itself.

Centuries of natural weathering, rainwater erosion, and human interference have blurred many of these carvings, leaving them faint and fragmented. Yet, a few masterpieces endure, vivid and captivating:

  • The serene Pratyekabuddha
  • The wise Manjusri Bodhisattva
  • Delicate flying apsaras with their ethereal grace
  • A dynamic dragon (Plate 4) with claws outstretched as if ready to soar

You’ll also spot majestic lions of varying sizes, graceful serving maidens, a stately elephant, and even a quirky crab scuttling in stone. Each carving is strikingly lifelike, blending intricate craftsmanship with a playful charm that feels almost modern.
