History of Chongqing Liberary
The library traces its origins to 1947, when it was established as the National Roosevelt Library to honor U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his significant contributions to the global fight against fascism during World War II.
The modern building you see today is a striking blend of tradition and innovation, opened its doors in 2007 following an extensive renovation.
Chongqing Liberary Collections
Chongqing Library boasts an impressive collection of over 4.6 million items, including 532,000 ancient thread-bound books, a treasure trove of historical texts.
It houses more than 200,000 United Nations documents and a diverse range of foreign-language materials, including 130 types of international newspapers and magazines (approximately 9,000 volumes) and over 60,000 foreign books published between the 1920s and 1980s in languages such as English, Japanese, Russian, French, and German.
Additionally, the library offers around 1,500 new foreign-language books published after 2000, primarily in English, covering topics from economics and politics to literature, social sciences, education, art, history, law, military, natural sciences, and medicine.
Getting a Liberary Card
All readers are welcome to apply for a free Chongqing Library card, granting access to dedicated study rooms, extensive book collections, and borrowing privileges.

- Provide local contact and address
- Sign the reader’s agreement
First-time registration is free, though a ¥100 refundable deposit is required.
The card is valid for two years, after which you can renew it at the library’s front desk.
If you lose your card, a replacement can be issued for a ¥10 fee.
