Hiking at Chongqing Mountain City Trail
Join me on an unforgettable hike along Chongqing’s Mountain City Trail, a downhill adventure starting at the Daqiangba Water Plant Memorial Tower near Qixinggang Metro Station (Line 1).
I recommend beginning here to enjoy a gentle descent, saving your energy to soak in stunning views, historic landmarks, and the vibrant culture of old Chongqing.
Kick off your journey at the Daqiangba Water Plant Memorial Tower, a 28-meter Republican-era gem. Built with brick and stone, its church-like silhouette—featuring a circular colonnade, cylindrical midsection, and square upper tower with water-polished stone—blends eclectic architectural charm with Chongqing’s early industrial heritage.
From here, the downhill path lets you savor the trail’s sights without the strain of climbing, unlike those puffing their way up from Shibati!
We head down the road, and get ready to make a left when you hit the staircase.
Turn left, and you’ll run into the majestic Huangjue trees, Chongqing’s iconic city tree.
Their gnarled, sturdy trunks and dangling, deer-claw-like roots form a striking canopy.
Known as the “trees of memory,” these century-old giants drop their leaves on the exact anniversary of their planting—a quirky nod to the past.
Thriving in Chongqing’s rugged terrain, they’re a living symbol of the city’s enduring spirit.
Across from the river, you catch a glimpse of Nanan District’s twinkling skyline. The Mountain City Trail offers sweeping views of Nanan and the Yangtze River, while another popular route, Mid-mountain Cliff Hiking Trail, showcases Jiangbei District and the Jialing River.
Here, you’ll spot hikers coming up from Shibati taking a breather. That’s why I suggest starting at Qixinggang—you’ll have energy to spare for exploring.
You’ll also notice rock inscriptions, a tradition of ancient Chinese poets carving words into stone.
Scattered across China and Chongqing, these carvings are a testament to the city’s long rich history.
Next, you’ll pass remnants of the ancient city wall, a defensive marvel built by Zhang Yi during the Jiangzhou era (Chongqing’s ancient name) over 2,300 years ago.
Crafted along the mountainous terrain for strategic oversight, it was rebuilt in 1371 during the Ming Dynasty by commander Dai Ding. Its weathered stones whisper tales of Chongqing’s past.
Then comes the French Benevolent Hall, a charity hospital founded by French missionaries in 1902.
In 1944, it became the Wartime Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital, and today, it’s part of Chongqing’s No. 1 Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital.
The historic building still stands, radiating old-world charm.
You’ll also spot St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a Gothic-style Catholic church from 1893, its spires adding a serene touch to the trail.
Keep walking downhill, and you’ll reach the former Jinma Primary School site, a glimpse of what a typical Chinese elementary school looked like back in the day.
Inside, there’s a cozy library and a tea house. The day I visited, the place was buzzing with activities—locals sipping tea and chatting away.
As we continue down, the alley narrows, alive with visitors exploring.
I grabbed a rose-flavored glutinous rice ball drink from a stall here, and wow, it was delicious!
The vendor claimed their shop had been featured on TV five times—I’m skeptical, but the taste was undeniable.
This alley feels like old Chongqing, before modern skyscrapers took over.
You can see the contrast of old stone walls against new signs, a perfect blend of past and present.
You’ll really appreciate my downhill tip here, trust me!
Don’t miss the Memory House of Mountain City Alley, a spot packed with exhibits about Chongqing’s history. It’s a great way to wrap up the trail’s story.
And that’s it! You’ve conquered the Mountain City Hiking Trail, a journey through Chongqing’s heart, history, and flavors.
With every step, from ancient trees to vibrant alleys, you’ll feel the city’s soul—especially with those views in your photos!
