Chongqing Natural History Museum Highlights

Chongqing Natural History Museum

Tucked away in Chongqing’s Beibei District, the Chongqing Natural History Museum is a timeless gem, boasting over 90 years of continuous history as one of the city’s oldest museums.

This architectural marvel pays homage to nature, drawing inspiration from the iconic Huangjue tree, whose resilient roots weave through rocky cliffs across Chongqing’s rugged landscapes.

These resilient trees, with their roots weaving through rocky cliffs, area common sight across Chongqing, especially along scenic mid-mountain hiking trails: Discover Chongqing’s Mid-mountain Cliff Trail: A Hike Through Urban Beauty.

The museum’s architecture brilliantly mirrors this natural wonder, with its exterior designed to evoke the sinuous forms of tree roots encircling stone, blending human ingenuity with the rugged beauty of the landscape.

Spanning 216 mu (approximately 14.4 hectares), the museum boasts a total building area of 30,842 squaremeters, with 16,252 square meters dedicated to exhibitions. Its six captivating galleries—“Animal Planet,”“Dinosaur World,” “Mountain and River City,” “Earth’s Mysteries,” “Life’s Torrent,” and “Ecological Homeland”—take visitors on a journey through Earth’s evolution, the diversity of life, and Chongqing’s dramatic landscapes (also featured in Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and Chongqing Three Gorges Museum).

The exhibits highlight the intricate relationship between natural resources, the environment, and human activity, championing the ideals of harmony with nature and sustainable development.
