Zhongshan Ancient Town
Zhongshan Ancient Town Highlights
Zhongshan Ancient Town is located in Chongqing’s Jiangjin District, near the famous Ladder of Love hiking trail. This ancient town traces its origins to the Han Dynasty, flourished during the Tang, and reached its zenith in the Qing. Since the Song Dynasty, it has been a vital hub for trade and commerce.
The town boasts a documented history spanning over 800 years, steeped in rich cultural heritage. Renowned as the “Ancient Town of Merchant Virtue and a Paradise of Traditional Residences,” it harmoniously blends rugged mountains, unique rock formations, serene waters, ancient bridges, historic streets, long corridors, and tranquil gardens.
Today, 1,132 meters of the street and 307 shopfronts remain well-preserved. Paved with bluestone slabs and varying in width from 3 to 5 meters, the street is lined with traditional Ba-style stilted houses, intricately layered and closely packed, creating a visually striking, undulating skyline.
