Chongqing, a sprawling metropolis where mountains meet skyscrapers, offers a hiking gem that captures its unique charm: the Mid-mountain Cliff Trail.

Stretching 28 kilometres between Yuzhong and Shapingba districts, this scenic trail—especially its well-maintained 7.8-kilometre main section—blends urban views, cultural treasures, and natural serenity.

As a Chongqing native, I’ve hiked this trail since my school days, and its blend of nostalgia and vibrant energy keeps me coming back. Whether you’re chasing Tiktok-worthy shots or a glimpse of local life, here’s why the Mid-mountain Cliff Trail deserves a spot on your Chongqing itinerary.

Trail Highlights

The Mid-mountain Cliff Trail isn’t just a hike; it’s a journey through Chongqing’s soul. Here are the must-see spots and activities along the way:

Soak in Stunning Views

Perched halfway up the mountain, the trail offers panoramic views of the Jialing River and Guanyinqiao’s glittering skyline across the water. Stop at one of the many viewing decks to catch your breath and snap photos of Chongqing’s urban sprawl framed by lush greenery. On clear days, the river sparkles under the sun, creating a postcard-perfect scene.

Strike a Pose at the Red Wall

Near the Daping entrance, the vibrant Red Wall has become a social media sensation for its bold, photogenic backdrop. It’s impossible to take a bad picture here, whether you’re posing solo or with friends. Conveniently, there’s a restroom nearby, making this a practical stop to refresh before continuing.

Step Back in Time at Guanyue Temple

Tucked along the trail, Guanyue Temple is a tranquil Taoist retreat dedicated to the revered general Guan Yu and, later, the hero Yue Fei. Rebuilt in 2009 at Liziba, the temple features ornate halls and a peaceful courtyard perfect for a quiet break.

On a rainy day, the patter of drops on banana leaves adds a meditative charm.

Sip tea, admire ancient door god carvings—a rare glimpse of traditional Chinese culture—and soak in the slow-paced mountain vibe. Parking is available if you’re driving.

 Catch the “Train to Spring”

In late February and early March, the trail buzzes with visitors flocking to see Chongqing’s famous light rail, nicknamed the “Train to Spring.” As it weaves through blooming flowers, the train—famously passing through a building at Liziba station—looks like it’s gliding into a floral wonderland. It’s a magical sight that captures Chongqing’s blend of urban innovation and natural beauty.

Explore Local Life and Hidden Caves

As you hike, you’ll spot locals cooling off by cave entrances, a natural escape from Chongqing’s humid summers. These air-raid shelters, some sealed and others open, double as rest stops with stone tables for picnics. The trail’s cliffs, currently under reinforcement for safety, bear the marks of time, with pressure sensors ensuring their stability. Protective nets and railings now line the path, a modern touch compared to my childhood hikes when the trail felt wild and undiscovered.

Uncover History at Fotuguan Stone Carvings

At Fotuguan Park, ancient cliffside inscriptions from the Qing Dynasty and Republic era whisper stories of the past. Sadly, weathering and vines have blurred many carvings, and recent stabilization efforts obscure some texts, including the bold “Fotuguan” characters etched in 1882. While the site awaits preservation, it’s a humbling reminder of Chongqing’s layered history.

A nearby elevated walkway, still under construction, promises thrilling skyline views in the future.

Plan Your Visit

Pack comfortable shoes, water, and a camera to capture the trail’s magic. Spring brings blooming flowers, while autumn offers cooler hikes. Whenever you visit, the Mid-mountain Cliff Trail promises an unforgettable blend of exercise, culture, and Chongqing’s unbeatable skyline. Come explore this mountain city’s heart—one step at a time.
